What is Coaching?

The Coaching Acadamy defines coaching as an interactive process in which the coach guides and facilitates the client's progress towards defined goals. These may include relationships, career, self-confidence, financial matters or, a more general uneasy feeling that life has 'drifted' off course.

Other major coaching bodies and authors explain coaching as:

"..unlocking a person's potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them." Sir John Whitmore Author of 'Coaching for Performance'

"an interactive process that helps individuals and organisations to develop more rapidly and produce more satisfying results. Coaches work with clients in all areas including business, career, finances, health and relationships. As a result of coaching, clients set better goals, take more action, make better decisions, and more fully use their natural strengths."  International Coach Federation

Coaching is for people who want to make changes in their lives - the emphasis is action-oriented with the focus on a client’s current life and plans for the future, You don’t need a problem to be coached – successful people are increasingly turning to coaching as a means to be more successful.

Where clients are facing particular challenges, then the empowerment that coaching brings enables them to successfully meet them and to move forward.

How does coaching differ from counselling, mentoring and training?

Counselling and other forms of therapy are much more about healing of emotional wounds and reflections on past traumas. Coaching is not suitable for this, although it may be appropriate as a tool later in the healing process when the focus switches more to the future and moving forward.

Mentoring can involve advising, teaching and guiding another person to gain skills and / or experience in a particular area. Coaches do not give advice – clients have the answers – they may be buried deep within the subconscious and are released by the coaching process.

Coaching facilitates evaluation and resolution by the client through exploration of options and commitment to chosen actions. It takes an holistic approach, exploring the beliefs and values that are important in a client’s life

Coaching and training work very well together - coaching is the glue that makes training stick. When coaching and training are used in conjunction, coaching can significantly improve the long-term effectiveness of the training (88% increase in productivity has been suggested, compared with only 22% when training alone was used). Coaching methods can be used within organisations to ensure that individuals set goals and action points for applying the skills learned in training.

What are the benefits of coaching?

A recent study by the International Coach Federation found a wide range of benefits reported by individuals who are coached. These included:

  • increased self-awareness 68%
  • better goal setting 62%
  • lower stress levels 57%
  • increased confidence 52%
  • enhanced communication skills 40%
  • increased project completion 36%

The process challenges limiting beliefs and explores personal values. Limiting beliefs hold us back & affect our relationships at work & at home so these are strengthened by the process.

An expert is actively listening throughout in a supportive non-judgemental way. The agenda is that of the client. Every session is unique; my agenda is your wellbeing and success. Progress is monitored. This keeps you ‘on track’ towards the long term goal / aspiration / dream.

What happens in a coaching session?

Each session is characterised by goal setting. The reality of the topic is discussed and all options explored before actions are agreed and timescales for implementation are noted. Limiting beliefs that may be holding you back are challenged and session goals help you to work towards the overall goal that you want to achieve.

How long does each session last?

This can be either an hour or 45 minutes – whichever suits you best. Its important to ensure that you have time beforehand to ‘switch off’ from your day, to sit quietly and to prepare for the session ahead, so if you have only an hour free in your schedule, you should book 45minute sessions.

How many sessions will I need?

Each client is unique and the number of sessions required varies. After the first, introductory session I recommend a minimum of four sessions, usually at weekly intervals. The process may take up to 3 months with the duration between sessions lengthening as time passes. It is also important to work towards closure rather than bringing the coaching to an abrupt halt. You may also benefit from occasional, review sessions after a period of time in order to keep on track.

Book a free session to discuss how my services could benefit you; the merits of choosing hour-long or 45mins sessions and I will give you an indication of how many sessions you are likely to need.

What are your fees?

Our 4Star Service costs £217 for 4 1hour coaching sessions, or £187 for 4 sessions, each of 45mins duration. Many clients then book additional blocks of 4 and any unused sessions can be ‘banked’ and used as required over the next 6 months. This helps to keep on track to implement action plans and to deal with additional challenges as they arise. If preferred, single sessions can be booked. The fee is then £57/hour, or £50 for a 45min session.

Fees for individual corporate clients are £70 per hour with an additional supplement that is dependent on the travel time involved. Travel expenses are charged to the client.

Workshop fees are dependent on duration and range from £417 for 1.5/2hrs - £867 for a whole day. Discounted educational / charity rates are normally in the range £247 - £517 per workshop with further discounts for a series of workshops.

How do I pay?

  • Individuals: It is standard practice for you to pay in advance for your coaching sessions. This is usually by cheque or on a monthly Standing Order.
  • Corporate: You will be invoiced by LCCoaching. It is standard practice to pay monthly in advance of coaching sessions for employees. If you operate a Purchase Order system, you need to set LCCoaching up as a new supplier and raise a purchase order number before the coaching begins. Workshops are invoiced on the 1st session with settlement due within 30 days.

Do you coach face-to-face or only over the ‘phone?

Most one-to-one coaching takes place over the phone so that distance is no obstacle and coaching can take place internationally at mutually convenient times. Clients like the anonymity of the process and yet always report that they feel supported and have a great relationship with me. If a client prefers, then face-to-face coaching can be arranged (see question re fees).

Does it matter if I don’t already have a goal or a specific issue to be coached on?

No, it doesn’t matter provided that you are ready to consider making some changes in your life - a coaching exercise I use with my clients will enable you to identify the areas of your life that you want to focus on. From this you will be able to set goals which may be long term as well as shorter ‘journey’ goals.

Who are your clients?

I provide wellbeing life coaching for individuals, families and the corporate sector.

These include:

  • parents (and grandparents too) who may be attempting to juggle ‘too many balls in the air’ – they want to find creative ways of solving family problems and to have more balanced lives
  • parent groups in schools and Company employees
  • Corporate institutions who provide support for staff by offering them personal life coaching to deal with issues (such as stress) that affect their working lives
  • Employee groups whose employers commission workplace workshops on parent coaching and work-related issues
  • Individuals who want to improve their own wellbeing and/or achieve greater success. (Look at the questions on the Personal page and see if I can help you too)
  • Health Charities and Patient Support Groups committed to supporting patients with long term health problems or disabilities.

My clients are each unique but they all want:

  • to make changes in their lives
  • more from life or better work/life balance
  • increased sense of purpose
  • an increased sense of wellbeing

In addition, some want to be:

  • more confident
  • more ‘in control’
  • able to deal effectively with a new challenge
  • effective communicators (at work or with their families)
  • the best parent possible
